Squarespace was founded by Anthony Casalena in 2004 and has slowly added updates over the years. The biggest update was in July 2012 when they launched Squarespace 6, which added portfolio models, reactive projects and opened greater control for developers.
But this article does not concern the normal Squarespace platform for creating a normal website. It is a review of Squarespace Commerce-Squarespace’s main e-commerce package.
Technically, people with Squarespace sites have always been able to sell online by adding something like PayPal or Ecwid. But that wasn’t ideal.

Review of Square-space: features
As a content management system (CMS), Squarespace has a lot of features, widgets and additions. You can integrate Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. It is not customizable like WordPress, but it is not lacking in any important functionality. Indeed, Squarespace offers more integrated WordPress tools. However, WordPress tends to have the advantage with extensions, since Squarespace does not have an app or a plug-in store.
As an e-commerce platform, the list of features is growing rapidly and seems to focus on the most important elements of e-commerce.
Square space review: ease of use
Building a website and an online store with Commerce squarespace is pretty simple. The dashboard is clean and modern, with a menu tab on the left side to jump from page to page.
For example, you might want to check your inventory, then add a discount, then work on your marketing. All these tabs are just a click away in the dashboard. I could also argue that this interface is easier to understand than the all-powerful Shopify.
Things get complicated if you’re trying to do something, well, complicated. For example, you’re not going to personalize much more than what the Squarespace theme offers, that is, without any custom coding.
Squarespace offers a design module that is powerful enough to adjust elements such as the lock screen, logo, template and a lot of settings in the style editor. In fact, many elements of your model are customizable. If you are absolutely blocked, there is a CSS module to confuse with.
This is a live editor, but it has no drag and drop elements. That being said, the settings are intuitive enough to handle for most beginners.
Review Square space: prices
Squarespace Commerce was the only way to accept payments for online transactions, but everything changed. In fact, every plan offered through Squarespace is able to have a sort of e-commerce functionality.
For example, the business plan, as listed below, still offers the possibility to sell online. You can still technically incorporate something like a PayPal button into your personal account, but there is no longer any complete e-commerce support.
The monthly fee for the business plan is lower, but the problem is that Squarespace accepts a transaction fee:
- Personal information – $ 12 a month. This gives you a website with 20 pages, along with support for an unlimited number of products. It also has a tool to accept donations. They no longer offer e-commerce tools for this plan, but SSL is provided, so you can try a PayPal button if you wish.
- Business – $ 18 for a fully integrated e-commerce store with a 3% transaction fee. The company also launches promotional pop-ups, Google e-mail accounts and Google AdWords credits. Sell unlimited products and create a website with unlimited pages.
This is good news for companies that want to dabble in the e-commerce world. You can take your previously built Squarespace site and prove which products could sell well on your website. You are charged for the transaction, but at least your monthly costs remain the same.
As for the regular Squarespace Commerce plans, there are no transaction costs and the functionality has improved:
- BASE – $ 26 per month for a plan with no transaction costs (in addition to credit card fees), all the features of the business plan, unlimited products, free custom domain, mobile optimization, SSL security, powerful business metrics, verification form on the Squarespace domain, Xero integration, label printing, inventory, orders, taxes, customer accounts and discounts. Also, checkout is in your domain.
- Advanced – $ 40 a month for all features of previous plans, plus the checkout is still entered in your domain. In addition, you can receive powerful commercial metrics, inventory, orders, taxes, coupons, abandoned cart recovery, real-time carrier shipping, flexible discounts, gift cards and order APIs.
Squarespace has never been known as an opportunity website builder. It’s a premium solution and costs more money than many other platforms. Most free models are of the highest quality, so I really think it’s worth the price.
Similar to Shopify models, you are getting a design for a website that is probably worth over $ 10,000 for a fraction of the cost.
Quite honestly, however, given this Shopify offers a plan at $ 9, and Bigcartel offers plans from free to $ 20 – It’s hard for Squarespace to compete. The $ 12 and $ 18 Personal and Business plans are excellent, considering that not everyone wants to pay close to $ 30 for an e-commerce store. But you’re still stuck with transaction costs in those lower floors.
Review of Squarespace: models and design
This is Commerce squarespace The strong seed. These guys are known for design. The models offered are exceptional. I counted 16 online store themes and 80 standard themes, all with hipster names like Devlin, Five, Wells, Hudson and Dovetail. Are beautiful.
They can be easily customized and responsive, so they are all optimized for mobile devices. Many have been designed with blogging, art and creativity in mind, with a nice little category created just for e-commerce.
I’m not sure how much difference it makes, but at first glance it seems Shopify ‘ s themes are clearly made to sell, while Squarespace’s themes are made for beauty. Squarespace improved its selection of themes as it used to have only about 10 total. Therefore, this 80 + brand places it there with juggernauts like Shopify and BigCommerce. And, in my personal opinion, Squarespace’s themes seem much better.
Shopify has finished with 150 now, BigCommerce has over 100, and Volusion has 120, but you have to pay extra for some of these, and especially with Volusion, some are of poor quality. At least all Squarespace models are of high quality. Right now, I’d say that Squarespace’s design is exceptional, and even with its small selection, I’d classify them over most e-commerce platforms.
Review of Squarespace: inventory
Trade squarespace supports multidimensional product variants (size, color, weight). They do not limit the number of SKUs or products, so it is not unthinkable to think of being able to manage a large shop with the platform. Inventory management is facilitated by the ability to send shipment notifications and manage refunds directly from the dashboard. There are also options for stock updates and quick printing of shipping labels.
Finally, the real-time scanning of shipments and barcodes meets to show that Squarespace seems to have graduated only with small shops.
Squarespace Commerce Review: SEO and marketing
Squarespace Commerce’s SEO and marketing functions are pretty nice. You can edit page titles, meta descriptions, create custom URLs and all include XML sitemaps and valid XHTML code. You can also use 301 redirects. It has full social integration so you can get in touch with customers via Twitter, Facebook and other sites.
The thing with SEO, in general, is that there is only so much that your e-commerce platform can do. After that, it’s up to you to start creating blogs, working with Google Webmaster Tools, adding alternative text to images, and more. You can also sell on Facebook and put your products on Pinterest or Instagram. Squarespace has added a promotional popup to get the customer’s attention. The recovery of the abandoned checkout can be found on the most expensive plan and even has automatic discounts for your customers.
Since Squarespace is a slightly more recent e-commerce platform, it does not have specific e-commerce / marketing applications to extend the functionality of the stores. Review of Squarespace: payments
Trade squarespace only offers some payment options, but they are among the most popular on the market. As the default payment gateway, Stripe has been integrated with Squarespace and serves as the main payment solution to choose from. However, you also have the option of using PayPal or Apple Pay. All major credit cards are accepted, regardless of the payment gateway.
Stripe is easy to set up and is very popular these days in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia.
Everything depends on your country for Stripe, but you can expect to see a transaction fee of around 2.9% plus 30 cents for each successful charge. The same goes for PayPal.
There are no monthly fees or anything with Stripe or PayPal. You can accept all major credit cards and your money will be transferred to your bank account within one or two business days. Apple Pay is also an option for payment.
Review of Squarespace Commerce: security
Squarespace has demonstrated the ability to manage high volumes of traffic on your website while protecting customer information. SSL security is included in both primary trading plans and is visibly displayed to your customers in the browser bar, so they are more likely to trust you.

Squarespace has a comprehensive knowledge base for building websites and its e-commerce documentation is growing rapidly. For example, Squarespace has a wonderful webinar series that guides you through the e-commerce configuration and guarantees that everything, from inventory to shipping, is fine.
The brand offers 24/7 support, free with each floor, live chat support and an active forum for peer-to-peer guidance. Calling with their 24/7 support can sometimes take some time to convince someone to queue, but the support staff is very good. Squarespace does not outsource its support team like most competitors.
I really enjoyed building my site and online store using Squarespace. The company has always had a great reputation as a developer of blog / blog sites, so switching to e-commerce was a natural choice. Squarespace Commerce could be a good e-commerce platform for those who want to create an elegant online store with unlimited products and an ever increasing selection of marketing tools.
I’m starting to think that Squarespace is starting to compete with the big dogs BigCommerce , Shopify , or Corecommerce . Squarespace still lacks an app store, but the integrated features are quite impressive and continue to add high-profile additions to compensate for the lack of app stores.
I also think it could be a very strong platform for the people currently selling on Etsy or eBay who are trying to upgrade. Overall, it’s definitely the best option in terms of models, and it’s difficult to find a function in Shopify or BigCommerce that is missing in Squarespace.
